2) Statue: “If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.” Jo Davidson, a famous American sculptor, created this poignant statue of Thoreau, which stands in front of the recreated cabin as you enter the reserve. Thoreau wrote countless natural and political memoirs and essays, all of which have provided great inspiration not only to me, but to generations of Americans who believe or believed strongly in the American environmental movement. Visiting the setting that inspired one of America’s great literary works only reaffirmed my respect for Thoreau’s command over language, portraying nature through a pencil. |
