Sullivan Elementary,a pre-K through 8th grade school serving 800 students in the multi-cultural community of downtown Phoenix, was a perfect candidate for EDN’s greening project. Considered a Title I school, 100% of the students at Sullivan qualify for free breakfast and lunch. The school serves a Hispanic population, with about 75% of its students learning English as their second language. Sullivan’s neighborhood is a challenging area of Phoenix, and many of the students and their families face crime and environmental degradation around their homes and campus.
- EDN was inspired to choose Sullivan based on contact from Nicole Navratil, Sullivan’s music teacher, who has been committed to improving her school for her students and the environment. She believes Sullivan was a good choice for this project because, “we’ve got so many teachers that are so dedicated, and the kids are so fantastic and work so hard and deserve more opportunities than they are given right now.”
