William R. Sullivan Elementary School

On February 6, 2009, the Education team from Earth Day Network, joined by volunteers from the University of Phoenix Foundation , completed a school greening project at William R. Sullivan Elementary School, showcasing improvements to the school and grounds, and hosting an Earth Fair featuring fifteen local eco-minded organizations. The entire school visited the fair, exposing eight hundred students, their teachers and parents to information, displays, and hands-on activities, such as bird-watching on a campus nature walk, handling worms and learning about compost, eating fresh local oranges and discussing the benefits of local food, and experimenting with a model watershed to learn about pollution and runoff. Media representatives and other VIPs toured the school throughout the day.

The greening project included the following:

  • Installation of a 2.1k/W solar panel system that will save the school $120,000 over thirty years and 166,800 lbs of carbon emissions.
  • Installation of over 200 energy efficient light bulbs around the school.
  • Installation of 75 “smart” powerstrips to reduce energy usage in classrooms and computer labs.
  • Conduction of US-EPA EnergySTAR Rating Program energy audit to show major benefits of school greening and allow teachers and students to track their energy generation and savings.
  • Collection of student designs for eco-mural, to be painted on a prominent wall of the school.
  • Planting hundreds of native seeds and small plants for a schoolyard vegetable garden
  • Landscaping and tree planting around campus.
  • Earth Fair convening 15 environmental groups to showcase and highlight greening features and educate the students and community about their work with engaging, hands-on activities.
