Between 1.5 and 100 million species live on planet Earth; Homo sapiens, human beings, represent only one. Every region of the world has its own diverse ecosystem comprising a variety of different plants, animals, and microbial organisms. This vast diversity of life provides us with some of our most essential resources, such as food and medicine.
