Landmark House Action on Green Schools, No Child Left Inside

Despite the failure of the federal Climate Security Act - which Earth Day Network considered insufficient to tackle global warming - EDN had a major victory when the U.S. House of Representatives passed an historic education bill to provide $7- billion in grants to help green schools nationwide. On June 4th, the House passed the 21st Century Green High-Performing Public School Facilities Act, which will help schools to become more energy efficient and healthier. Following that huge success, on June 18th, the House Education and Labor Committee approved an amended version of the No Child Left Inside Act (NCLI.) As part of the NCLI Coalition, EDN is working to bring science-based environmental education to the 60 million K-12 school children in the US. EDN is gearing up for the battle to pass this legislation in the Senate, as well as preparing to expand our green schools and environmental education programs internationally. Donate now and support us in our efforts to provide every child with a healthy, green education.

Cool Globes: Hottest Exhibit of the Summer

EDN President Kathleen Rogers with Congressman John Hall (D-NY)

The Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet exhibit has become one of the biggest hits of the Washington, DC summer scene. On June 10th, the US Botanic Garden, where the globes are on display, hosted a reception for more than 300 people, including members of Congress, celebrities, business leaders and representatives from the community and the arts. The globes will be placed around the city of Washington this fall and then sold next spring to benefit Earth Day Network's green schools program. Earth Day Network has been greening schools across the U.S., installing green roofs and solar panels, green walls and energy efficient lighting, and even gardens and greenhouses, as well as promoting healthy food, safer cleaning products, and better recreational facilities. Green, sustainable schools have been shown to increase attendance, lessen allergies, and improve test scores.
